Exclusive Brethren (London party)
Brethren · 1848 · Britain, Continental Europe, North America, Australasia
The stream holding that association with evil defiles and that assembly discipline binds all assemblies as one body on earth; led in its first generation by J. N. Darby (d. 1882).
Exclusive Brethren (London party) was formed in 1848. Exclusive Brethren (London party) is a segment of the spine, a drawing convenience rather than a body that ended. Exclusive Brethren (London party)'s institutional line runs back through The Brethren movement, Church of England, Roman Catholicism to the post-apostolic church. No body on this tree is the assembly of Acts 2; where a body claims that, the claim appears in the claimed-lineage layer.
Between the post-apostolic church and Exclusive Brethren (London party) stand 4 divisions along the institutional line, counting separations and disputed forks, not mergers, renewals or national organizations.

On the tree
Solid lines are separations and unions; dashed lines are renewals that began inside a body; dotted gray lines are national organizations of one communion; a diamond marks a fork event where neither side is drawn as the one that left. Every line runs back to the post-apostolic church; no body descends from the assembly of Acts 2.
The event
The 1848 division (the Bethesda question), 1848
After the Plymouth troubles of 1845–47, Bethesda (Bristol) received individuals from Newton's former assembly; the Letter of the Ten (June 1848) stated its basis, and Darby's circular of August 26, 1848 cut off Bethesda and assemblies receiving from it. The movement resolved into Open and Exclusive streams, each regarding its own course as faithfulness to the original ground.
The other body from this event: Open Brethren.
Claimed lineage
What this tradition says about its own origin · restoration
Believers gathered simply to the Lord's name, owning no membership but that of the one body, stand on the ground of the assembly of God as at Pentecost — not a succession, not a denomination, a return.
Its own sources: Matthew 18:20; 1 Corinthians 1; Ephesians 4; J. N. Darby, Letters 1:308 (STEM Publishing); Considerations on the Nature and Unity of the Church of Christ (Dublin, 1828).
The documented record: Documented origins in Dublin and Plymouth, 1825–1831, by withdrawal from existing bodies. This is the claim the site itself professes, and it receives the identical dashed device as every other restoration claim.
In the holders' own words
“I found membership in scripture was not membership of a voluntary association on earth, but membership of Christ, a hand, a foot, &c. And as the Holy Ghost had formed one body on descending on the day of Pentecost (1 Cor. 12), so ministry was those whom He qualified for such or such a service.”
“What I judge to be essential to brethren is the possession of the Holy Ghost on earth, as come down on the day of Pentecost, and His forming the saints into one body.”
“It was not dissatisfaction with the apostolic succession of the English national episcopal body.”
In the explorer's claimed view this renders as a dashed line, labeled "gathered to the Lord's name (Matt 18:20) — the ground of the one assembly from Pentecost".
